How your support helps The Royal Children’s Hospital

Thanks to the support of the Woolworths community, Educational Play Therapist programs ensure that the hospital experience for children is a positive one. Educational Play therapists meet with children and their families to address some of the of the fears and misconceptions that children often have around their treatment, their condition and the hospital environment itself.

They use role play to familiarise children with their new environment, introduce them to treating teams, explore medical equipment or develop practical strategies to significantly reduce their fear and anxiety.

Another wonderful program supported by the Woolworths community is Be Positive. This dedicated television channel is produced by The Royal Children’s Hospital Educational Resource Centre and Educational Play Therapy department. Be Positive episodes are available at any time and help children and their families get to know the hospital, meet some of the staff and the technology they may experience while in the hospital’s care. Meet puppets Rocco and Jazz and find out more about Be Positive here.

“Thanks to the ongoing support of Woolworths staff and customers, RCH Educational Play Therapy has delivered more than 14,600 individualised procedural support sessions in 12 months. These sessions allow children to familiarise themselves with what will happen in their medical procedures. The play therapists help children explore the medical equipment that will be used and practice the clinical tasks they will need to do like lying still for scans, holding their breath for medical tests and having blood samples taken. Therefore, children are able to undertake their procedures with more knowledge and less anxiety, meaning procedures are quicker and less stressful, they need less sedation and most importantly that children spend less time in hospital. This support is now provided across all areas of the hospital where children undergo procedures.

Without the continued support of Woolworths this crucial service would not operate. Thank you on behalf of the many children and families Educational Play Therapy supports.”
