EIGHT-YEAR-old Lachie is getting excited for the All-Star Mile race. While his friend Jasper the pony won’t be competing, there are 83 horses vying to race, including Caulfield Cup winner Verry Elleegant and Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet.

The public will choose the final field, in what is Australia’s only fan voted race. The race will help raise money for the Good Friday Appeal, supporting children such as Lachie at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Public voting opens on January 22 and the $5m race will be staged at The Valley on March 13. Racing Victoria executive general manager Greg Carpenter said there were many up-and-coming horses in the entry list. He said 45 stables from Australia and New Zealand were vying to win the marquee race of Victoria’s autumn carnival.

“It will be fascinating to see how the voting period plays out,” he said. “With every $500 nomination fee going to The All-Star Mile’s official charity a total of $41,500 will be donated to the Good Friday Appeal.”
