Cruise raises funds
Neil's Cruise for the Kids launches with massive fundraising result.
The first ever Neil’s Cruise for the Kids has raised $370,451 for the Good Friday Appeal.
Neil’s Cruise, held by 3AW and Neil Mitchell on a Melbourne River Cruise boat on the Yarra River on Friday, 11 March.
There were 24 participants from a range of businesses and organisations who were held hostage on the cruise until they raised at least $5,000 for the Appeal.
The money raised will help The Royal Children’s Hospital purchase two expensive pieces of equipment used in surgery.
Dr Simone Harvey, a paediatric neurologist at the RCH told 3AW: “The equipment’s for intra-operative monitoring. It’s equipment that our neuro-physiology scientists use during operations that are being doing by the orthopedic surgeons or neurosurgeons. It’s specifically for their spinal surgery, so these scientists are stimulating at one end of the body … and then they’re measuring at the other end, and recording neural activity going up and down.
The machines cost around $150,000 each and are mainly used for children and adolescents for scoliosis surgery.
We are incredibly grateful to Neil Mitchell, 3AW, Melbourne River Cruises and the 24 participants and their generous donors for supporting the 2022 Good Friday Appeal.
The event has replaced the Escape From Neil’s Wheel Fundraiser. In five years, the 3AW fundraisers have raised almost $1.5 million.
